Abstract : In this essay the focus is on lieux de mémoire which are connected to the history of migration in the German-speaking countries and in Austria in particular. The main aim of dealing with them is to critically analyse ethnically, nationally or culturally defined differences as well as their modes of construction and their effects. This approach is based on the concept of migration pedagogy which sheds light on power relations in a given society and questions the predominance of categorisations based on concepts like ‘nation’, ‘cultural identity’ or ‘ethnic identity’. Within the context of foreign language learning migration pedagogy provides a perspective for enabling learners to work on their symbolic competence, i.e. the competence of understanding processes of meaning making.
