This book is a collective effort of scholars who elaborate on democracy, civil society and media-political relations in Central and Eastern Europe. The authors look at both theories and practices of media systems and democracy. They indicate problems, risks, challenges related to political transformations, the public sphere, journalism culture and media freedom. All of this while bearing in mind the growing role of new media, civic engagement in the online space as well as societal changes that Central and Eastern European democracies are going through in the second decade of the 21st Century. This book is a helpful companion to media and communication scholars as well as students of journalism and political science, media practitioners and policy makers in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond.

The Polish think tank scene

Abstract: Governance in democratic political systems is continually taking on, in an ever more distinct form, cooperation between public and nonpublic entities. The dynamic development of think tanks in Poland is a manifestation of the most recent changes in the sphere of public life. The influence of think tanks on the decision-making process is dependent upon four main factors: the authority resulting from the character of the activity conducted by them, their skills in shaping the relationship with other participants in communication, their presence in the public discourse, and last but not least their credibility in public opinion. These factors are interrelated; success demands a sufficient level of coexistence. The goal of this chapter is to analyze various aspects concerning the existence of think tanks in Poland. Their manner of functioning, condition, and mode of communicating with their respective stakeholders will be analyzed. Special attention will be focused on the question of mutual relations between think tanks and the media as well as on the way in which think tanks take advantage of the formal and informal channels of communication with the goal of influencing decision-making processes and the public debate.
