This volume contains the revised versions of 63 papers, written in German, English and French. It considers a broad spectrum of topics and findings from various areas of linguistics and thereby offers a critical review of the field. The authors address questions ranging from grammar, semantics, text and discourse pragmatics to issues from the field of applied linguistics. The volume is concluded by studies on contrastive linguistics and foreign language pedagogy.

Semantic and Pragmatic Aspects of Definiteness

1 Introduction

This paper is based on the present author’s longer paper, namely “Pragmatics and the problem of definiteness”, which is going to be published in a festschrift for Roman Kalisz1. We shall deal here with the following topics: (1) essence and scope of pragmatics: Levinson (1983), (2) essence and scope of pragmatics: Kalisz (1993), (3) deixis and definiteness according to Levinson (1983) (4) definiteness in terms of speech acts and appropriateness conditions: Hawkins (1978), (5) definiteness in a truth-relational approach, and (6) definiteness as a grammatical category in a selectional-generative model.

2 The essence and scope of pragmatics: Levinson (1983)

2.0 Trying to characterize definiteness from the semantic and the pragmatic points of view, one should first consider how the relationship between semantics and pragmatics is viewed by various linguists, and especially by those who deal with pragmatics par excellence. In this connection, in the first two parts of this paper we shall successively concentrate on two books, namely Stephen C. Levinson’s Pragmatics published in 1983 and Roman Kalisz’s Pragmatyka jqzykowa (= Linguistic pragmatics) published in Polish in 1993.

Levinson devotes Chaper 1 of his book to the scope of pragmatics and more than half of the chapter to the problem of defining pragmatics. He presents and critically evaluates ten possible approaches.
