The development of this complementiser expressing negative purpose, which has been generally discounted in historical linguistics, will be investigated with regard to grammaticalisation mechanisms advanced by Heine (2003 ) and Heine – Kuteva (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007). The language material for this study is collected for the most part from The Oxford English Dictionary (OED2) and the electronic corpora of the English language such as CMEPV, ARCHER, ICAME and ICAMET. The references to the language examples cited in this paper follow the conventions of the corpora’s compilers. All the translations of the presented material are the author’s.
