Studies in Honour of Piotr Ruszkiewicz

Series:

Edited By Alicja Witalisz

This volume is a collection of papers approaching the phenomenon of language from a variety of perspectives. Scholars in phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, historical linguistics and translation studies share the results of their research. They invite the reader on a journey into the multifaceted and complex world of human language, moving from the study of sound through the description of structure to the analysis of meaning. The volume has been brought together to honour Professor Piotr Ruszkiewicz from the Institute of Modern Languages of the Pedagogical University of Cracow, a linguist and academic lecturer.

1. Introduction

The development of this complementiser expressing negative purpose, which has been generally discounted in historical linguistics, will be investigated with regard to grammaticalisation mechanisms advanced by Heine (2003 [2005]) and Heine – Kuteva (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007). The language material for this study is collected for the most part from The Oxford English Dictionary (OED2) and the electronic corpora of the English language such as CMEPV, ARCHER, ICAME and ICAMET. The references to the language examples cited in this paper follow the conventions of the corpora’s compilers. All the translations of the presented material are the author’s.
