In this book, sixteen authors from Europe, Africa and America reflect on the transformations which currently take place in the field of adult and continuing education. They explore processes of globalisation and individualisation and their impact on the basic concepts and practices in this domain. They develop perspectives on how and why to put the issue of social responsibility back on the agenda in various fields of adult and continuing education, i.e. community education, labour education, basic education, environmental education. They furthermore explore the value of traditional concepts such as critical reflection, autonomy and empowerment within the context of a postmodern society. Finally, the editors suggest to combine critical, ethical and aesthetical perspectives in view of reinventing the link between social responsibility and adult education.
