Law in Art

Melville's Major Fiction and Nineteenth-Century American Law

Susan Weiner

Contents: This book explores Melville's works in relationship to nineteenth-century American law. Imaginative discourse is viewed as a challenge to legal discourse and the novel is connected to the rise of legal formalism. Ultimately law is seen as a failure, and literature becomes an alternative to fill in «the space between» things as they are and things as they might be.
