The narration of the development of the artist has found its literary medium in the genre, the Künstlerroman. This specific novel traces the embryonic growth of the artist-protagonist from the moment when he exhibits artistic talents to the point when he actually creates. Specific themes, motifs, and structure define the genre. The authors studied are: Hermann Hesse, D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce, and Theodore Dreiser.
