INTRODUCTION

Digital Disruption

We live in a disrupted world. Increasingly, everything we do is impacted by technology: how we communicate with others, connect at work, learn at school, and live our lives. As technology continues to seep into our lives we become accustomed to it and dependent on it.

This puts pressure on workplace leaders and education systems and even on ourselves to rethink how we approach the new world of work, leadership, lifelong learning, skill development, and careers. The accelerated pace of technology and competitive forces continues to change the workplace environment, causing it to be more technical, more diverse, and more in need of disruptive leaders.

This new landscape requires new styles of leadership and new techniques of managing organizations. Today, there are new pressures on company leaders, workers, and educators to change the ways in which they prepare and plan for modern-day jobs and careers.

This book will cover the key forces impacting the future of work, industries, leadership styles, skills, and education, with a focus on how to remain relevant in an increasingly complex digital world. It updates and advances earlier research from Tracey Wilen’s previous books: .edu: Technology and Learning Environments in Higher Education; Society 3.0: How Technology Is Reshaping Education, Work and Society; Women Lead: Career Perspectives from ← 1 | 2 → Workplace Leaders; and Employed for Life: 21st Century Career Trends, as well as Wilen’s white papers.

This book also advances the body of research on technology, leadership, education, women, and careers, and provides updates on current strategies, case examples, and best practices.

The book is organized into chapters that can be read individually and used for classes or organization workshops, and that can be read in any sequence.

Chapter 1: The Impact of Technology on Society. Technology has had a deep impact on society as it has become fully integrated into our lifestyles. This chapter covers some of the trends and technologies that have impacted and changed society, facilitating new ways of communication, efficiency, and a new world of work.

Chapter 2: The Future of Work. The world of work has changed profoundly in a very short time. This chapter covers some of the forces impacting organizations, as well as examining how the workplace has changed to a more diverse workforce, and how technological innovations will continue to change how we work and where we work. It also covers the need for new skills and techniques to navigate the new world of work.

Chapter 3: The Future of Industry. There’s a new technology revolution happening around us and it’s changing the foundation of many industries. This chapter discusses the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a digital revolution where disruptive technologies are blurring the lines between the physical and digital worlds, changing the future of industries, and changing our futures right before our eyes. This chapter outlines the vast number of industries that are rapidly changing, requiring a more skilled workforce to adapt to the ever-shifting landscape of work.

Chapter 4: Disruptive Leadership. In a disrupted world we need disruptive leaders who can guide and lead organizations in this new world of work. This chapter discusses how disruptions in the workforce and industry require disruptive leaders who think and lead differently.

Chapter 5: Women as Disruptive Leaders. Women are natural-born disruptors, and over the years they have truly changed the landscapes of many fields. This chapter discusses how and why women will be key influential leaders in all types of organizations, leading us into the future of work.

Chapter 6: Leading a Diverse Workforce. The United States is a melting pot of cultures, ages, religions, genders, and ethnic backgrounds. This chapter discusses leadership in a diverse world of work with practical case examples and innovative best practices. ← 2 | 3 →

Chapter 7: Don’t Let Technology Control-Alt-Delete Your Job. In today’s technology-based world, individuals are increasingly concerned with how to stay employed and how to be employable in the future. This chapter discusses the impact of technology on jobs, future job prospects, and how to ensure employability for the future.

Chapter 8: New Skills for a Digital World. A disruptive world requires that people have new types of skills in addition to the skills that they already have. To be successful in the next decade, individuals must demonstrate foresight in navigating a rapidly shifting landscape of skill requirements and continually reassess the skills that they need. This chapter discusses skills both new and old that may be critical to maneuver around the digital landscape.

Chapter 9: Disrupted Education. The new world of work has put pressure on education systems to respond to ensure that students are educated, skilled, prepared, and employable. This chapter discusses how the education landscape has changed and what educators can do to help ensure students are prepared for a new world of work.

Chapter 10: The Future of You: Is It Time for a Career Selfie? A career selfie is taking a snapshot of where you are in your career at any point in time and focusing on your next steps. This chapter discusses how to take a career selfie, and some of the key steps necessary to manage your career and ensure continuous employment.
