The visualization of foreign language vocabulary in CALL

by Angela Heidemann (Author)
©1996 Thesis 132 Pages

Summary

«A picture speaks a thousand words», hence their abundant use in teaching materials. Since the advent of multimedia computers, the visual age has also reached CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning). But are pictures always used optimally and to the greatest advantage of the learner? This book takes a new look at current research about the perception, storage and retrieval of words and pictures in the human mind, cognitive learning strategies, and picture research. Pleading for more cooperation and understanding between researchers, publishers and illustrators, the author has assembled a pragmatic set of principles for the visualization of foreign language vocabulary and applied them in this book.
