Set Theory is both the most important and most difficult contribution to 20th century music analysis and composition of the last forty years. Set Theory Objects provides a comprehensive introduction to this theory and its practice, explaining the concepts and terminology used precisely and understandably. Computers are a valuable tool in set theoretic work. This book not only provides a survey of currently available software, it also describes the development of a new program for set theoretical applications. Particular attention is paid to the strategies followed in designing the program to make it a truly usable tool for musicians, regardless of their technical sophistication. Biographical notes

Peter Castine (Author)

The Author: Peter Castine studied music and mathematics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1971-73), composition with Frank-Michael Beyer at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin (Prüfung der Konzertreife 1979), and computer science at the Technical University Berlin (M.Sc. 1988). He received his Ph.D. in communications sciences and musicology from the TU Berlin in 1994. Active since 1979 as pianist, conductor, and composer, from 1988 to 1993 Assistant Professor at the TU Berlin in the Department of Communications Sciences, Castine is currently a research associate at the Process Control Center of the TU Berlin.
