Summary

The second volume of the Schumann correspondence contains letters written by Robert Schumann (1810-1856) and Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) in 1839, documenting the major events of that year: Clara's concert tour and stay in Paris, Friedrich Wieck's continued vehement opposition to Robert's courtship of his daughter, Clara and Robert's legal action to obtain the court's consent for their marriage, Clara's reunion and stay with her mother in Berlin, and the death of Robert's brother Eduard.

The Editor: Eva Weissweiler received her Ph.D. in Music and Germanistik in 1974. Her publications include Women Composers over the Last Five Centuries (Komponistinnen aus 500 Jahren) 1981, Fanny Mendelssohn: Italian Diary (Fanny Mendelssohn: Italienisches Tagebuch) 1982, Fanny Mendelssohn: A Portrait in Letters (Fanny Mendelssohn: Ein Porträt in Briefen) 1985. Dr. Weissweiler is the editor of the original German edition of The Complete Correspondence of Clara and Robert Schumann (Clara/Robert Schumann: Briefwechsel, Kritische Gesamtausgabe) 1984, 1987. She lives and works in Cologne, Germany. The Translators: Hildegard Fritsch is an associate professor of German at Kent State University. She received her Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. Her publications include a book and articles on 20th-century German literature. Ronald L. Crawford is an associate professor of German at Kent State University. He received his doctorate from Rutgers University and has published a variety of literary and pedagogical studies. Fritsch and Crawford translated Volume I of the Schumann correspondence.
