This course is intended mainly for university students of English as a foreign language and is designed for use during three semesters. After a table of the English phonemes and an explanation of the terms used to describe them, the course deals with each phoneme in turn, pointing out in particular where it differs from its German equivalent. Exercises in its use follow, consisting first of proverbs and/or simple idiomatic phrases, then of more difficult sentences, and finally, for light relief, but also for further practice in fluency, of limericks, clerihews or other facetious rhymes. Particular attention is devoted to the use of «weak forms» in colloquial speech. The course has been recorded in RP, and these tapes are available to assist teacher or student.
