Summary

This edited volume provides a collection of articles that focus on the close relationship between horses and humans in various ethnic, social, and professional communities. In contrast to other publications on horses in the Middle Ages that discuss one function of the horse, this volume contains contributions from a number of disciplines to provide a more robust view of the role of the horse. A further innovation of this volume is the inclusion of articles that discuss various aspects of the horse in cultures outside of Europe, such as Cairo, Tangut (China) and Byzantium.
