The university of Dole was founded in 1423, and upon its six hundred’s anniversary, the event was festively celebrated, accompanied by a symposium (June 22–23, 2023), the papers of which are assembled here. The proceedings can interest virtually all scholars working in the field of the late Middle Ages, a time of major foundations of universities, thus a significant launching of institutions of higher learning across Europe. The university of Dole was founded by the Duke of Bourgogne, Philip the Good, and the contributors to this volume examine this type of princely foundation across the map. Other universities were founded by high-ranking clerics, cities, kings, or princes, and we could easily write an entire history of these educational institutions.
