Despite their central role in nearly every aspect of medieval life, the secular clergy remains poorly understood by the general public and underrepresented in undergraduate courses on the Middle Ages. John Ott’s and Anna Trumbore Jones’ sourcebook seeks to remedy this lacuna by bringing together texts from the early and high Middle Ages that put these figures into clearer focus for students of the medieval past. The editors have published separately and together on the history of the clergy, notably their edited collection The Bishop Reformed: Studies of Episcopal Power and Culture in the Central Middle Ages (2007). Standing alongside scholarship such as Julia Barrow’s The Clergy in the Medieval World, this volume will serve as a useful teaching tool to complement undergraduate courses on Church history and the medieval period in general.
