Once having read this hefty volume, there seems to be very little left one still might need to learn about horses particularly in medieval England. A group of archeologists, historians, art historians and others have come together for this massive project to cover the history of medieval horses, though the emphasis rests on archeological and zooarcheological research. Although the book title suggests a narrow focus on the warhorse, the range of topics pertaining to medieval horses is considerably wider. In ten chapters and one conclusion, various authors discuss the history of horses, their breeding, stables, studs, tournaments and tiltyards, sculptures, artworks, and other objects associated with horses, horse equipment (bits and pieces), armor and horseshoes, the depiction of horses in artworks, and horse stature over the course of time. The collaboration on this project was made possible by a Standard Research Grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (2019–2023) and other grants and research fellowship.
