This article offers three answers: 1) growing awareness of the new direction performing theatre is taking; 2) the clarity and courage with which the theatre collective tackles sensitive key the- mes of modern life that are bound up with universal problems of being human; 3) the theatrical and technical skill with which a deeply meaningful scenic expression is created on the basis of a document of reality, all within the context of theatre history (echoing Brechti- an theatre, political theatre, folk processions and rituals, the physi- cal theatre of the second avant garde, Kantor’s Theatre of Death, and Grotowski’s Laboratory Theatre). The article explores this on the basis of the Bodenprobe Kasachstan (Soil Sample Kazakhstan) and Remote Milano projects, drawing comparisons with groups and individual artists in Italy who are treading different paths but share some fundamental views of the theatre with Rimini Protokoll.
