Edited By Andreas Beriger, Stefan Maria Bolli, Widu-Wolfgang Ehlers, Michael Fieger and Wilhelm Tauwinkl

Abstract

Textual traditions are different in the various biblical languages. Partly they are also obscured. The Hebrew sources from Qumran, Hexapla and Masora present quite a uniform and linear picture. In Greek, the differences are more complex (LXX, Hexapla, NT). The original Latin sources are very puzzling and manifold, Jerome’s work causing texts to be considerably more uniform (Vulgate).

It is worthwhile to deal with Jerome, because he refers to the original languages. Jerome can be considered a church father of ecumenical Christianity. He confronted the controversies of his time which are no less challenging today. Together with Origen he established “true“ exegesis and correct work on texts.
