Series:

Edited By Jürgen Fuchsbauer and Emanuel Klotz

Amber Ivanov (Gent), A Modified Diplomatic Edition of the Metaphrastic Martyr Act of Saint Thecla in Church Slavonic

Amber Ivanov (Ghent)

Extract

Abstract

This article introduces the first printed edition of the translation into Church Slavonic of the Metaphrastic Martyr act of Saint Thecla, accompanied by the Greek text. The edition is based on the only textual witness of the 10th-century version of Thecla’s Martyr act, viz. the copy in the 14th-century manuscript, which for the purposes of this research is called “Hilandar Metaphrast °2”. The manuscript has only recently resurfaced and is located at the library of the Hilandar monastery on Mount Athos. Neither the text, nor the manuscript have been analysed yet. Because of its unique character, this manuscript could possibly shed an entire new light on 14th-century hagiographical writing in Slavia Orthodoxa. With this first edition, I hope to encourage research in Metaphrastic hagiographies in the medieval Slavonic tradition in general.

For this bilingual edition, I also analysed the Greek manuscript tradition briefly, as a critical edition of the Greek original is lacking. A summary of the results is presented in another article, devoted to the analysis of the Metaphrastic corpus of Thecla in both the Greek and Slavonic hagiographic traditions. A description of the orthographical, grammatical and lexical characteristics of the Slavonic translation is also included here.
