Original scientific paper Specialized communication and culture, practice, compe- tence and knowledge: Implications and derived insights Jan Engberg Summary The focus of this paper is on four recent developments in the study of specialized communica- tion based on methods and theories from applied linguistics. After a brief presentation of the main characteristics of traditional approaches to studies of specialized language and commu- nication, the main trends of development are presented (enlarging the scope, including criti- cism, awareness of cognitive aspects, application of mixed methods). Four lines of develop- ment are described, each focusing on a different perspective of specialized communication: 1) the perspective of culture, 2) the perspective of social practice, 3) the perspective of (cogni- tive) competence, and 4) the perspective of knowledge. The differences between the perspec- tives are demonstrated by way of comparing models typically used in works in the different categories. Introducing the topic: Where is Research in Specialized Com- munication today? The purpose of this paper is to give an overview from my perspective of current trends of development in the field of research into specialized communication, which has been part of applied linguistics for a number of decades (German: Fachsprachenforschung or Fachkommunikationsforschung). Traditionally, re- search in this discipline has been focused upon linguistic aspects of varieties of language used in professionally and/or academically specialized settings (see section 2 below).
