147 Preaching and Globalization: Clues for a Bio-centric Symbiotic Homiletic Dr. Mauro B. de Souza Abstract The importance of Brazil for the world’s economy has grown the last few decades. It is possi- ble to affirm that Brazil is right in the middle of globalization. On the one hand, the country suffers it from transnational companies, which take the land’s natural resources, make big profits out of mining and industries, and leave behind pollution and destruction; but the coun- try also imposes it on other, smaller countries. As Brazilians, we cannot just complain about globalization without admitting we are also part of it. The sermon struggles to survive in this globalized, technology-oriented world, full of communication accessibilities that spread messages instantly. In that context, what is it that preachers are or should be saying, where, and how? The goal of this paper is to give a short overview of how globalization, when lacking so- cial and democratic control, can be perceived as globalitarism. Then it offers some reflections on the content of the sermon, building elements for a bio-centric, symbiotic homiletics. In the end, it will discuss a few issues regarding the form of the sermon in that context.
