Edited By Frank Schüssler
Foreword of the Editor
The Center for International Development and Environmental Research (Zent- rum für internationale Entwicklungs- und Umweltforschung, ZEU) was founded in 1998 as an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research institute of the Justus-Liebig-University, Giessen. Presently, faculty members from the follow- ing disciplines are associated with ZEU: Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences, Economics, Environmental Safety, Geography, Law, Statistics and Economet- rics as well as Social and Cultural Sciences. Upon ZEU's foundation, the follo- wing five sections were established: The use of natural resources and environmental preservation, Nutrition security, Human capacity in socio-economic systems, Institutional foundation of regional development processes, Transformation of economy and society. These sections also indicate the issues which research is currently focused on. A restriction of ZEU's activities to specific geographic regions is not considered. The series 'Schriften zur Internationalen Entwicklungs- und Umweltforschung' (Publications on International Development and Environmental Research) aims to present the results of ZEU's research activities and the state of discussions in the fields of our research to a broader public. The authors appreciate sugges- tions and critical remarks, in order to reconsider their own positions. The volumes of the series will appear intermittently and may be purchased in bookstores or directly from the publisher. Giessen, March 2010 Professor Dr. Thilo Marauhn Director of the Board
