Die Autorin analysiert Ergebnisse einer dreijährigen Feldstudie mit Handelsschülern mit den Migrationshintergründen Türkei und ehemaliges Jugoslawien. Im Fokus steht die Entwicklung der Sprachkenntnisse im Bereich Ausdruck und Formulierung. Die Autorin arbeitet heraus, welche Fehler diese Schüler/innen machen, ob sie im Alter von 14 Jahren noch behebbar sind und ob die Schüler/innen trotz teils sehr schlechter sprachlicher Voraussetzungen die Schule auf dem Sprachniveau ihrer österreichischen Kollegen/innen abschließen können.

Living in a country like Austria shaped by immigration, it is unavoidable to con- sider the possible consequences of immigration on the educational system. At the upper secondary vocational college of commerce in Bregenz, Austria, where I teach German the number of pupils with non-Austrian background has more than dou- bled over the past decade. At the beginning of the three-year-course I am con- fronted with a heterogeneous language group (German, Turkish, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian) with different German language skills. The group of non-German speakers in the class is twice as big as the group of German speakers. For a teacher of German it is therefore important to know what types of expression and wording errors pupils generate and whether pupils will be able to improve their language skills throughout the following three years so that they can be compared to those of their native German colleagues in the final exam they take at the end of the three- year-course. For the study I arbitrarily chose a group of 16 pupils at the age of 14 starting the vocational school – six native German speakers, five Turkish and five Yugo- slavian pupils (three Croatians, one Serbian and one Bosnian). I taught them in the subject German throughout the three years of vocational school starting with a survey in the first year which gave information about their social and educa- tional background before starting vocational school.
