'Zigeuner' als Grenzfiguren im kollektiven Gedächtnis
In the collective memory in many European countries the "gypsies" mark the dividing line between the social and the asocial. This dividing line has been shifting since the 1980s. The extent of this movement and its limits are examined on the basis of three examples: the new "Memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe murdered under the National Socialist regime" at the Reichstag building in Berlin, Richard Wagner's novel Das arme Mädchen (2007) and Armer Nanosh (1989), a film in the popular Tatort-series, the script of which was written by Martin Walser and Asta Scheib.
