Westliche Zivilisation versus Afrika
Postkoloniale Motive in Urs Widmers Roman Im Kongo
Urs Widmer's novel Im Kongo was well received by the critical audience, but the elements of slapstick in his treatment of most serious topics raised questions whether Africa was a mere setting for a joke. This paper attempts to correct a possible misunderstanding by contrasting the specific poetological orientation of the narrative with that of the psychological novel, working out its poetic value, which suggests a different perception of Africa. The author, it is argued, creates images, which construct alternative potentials of reality, which open the perspective for imaginable change.
