China Stands Up – the Wartime Foundations of China’s Emergence as a Great Power

Abstract: This essay depicts the role of the Nationalists in the Second Sino-Japanese war and the Nationalists’ early impact on later economic and political development of mainland China.

I regret that because of constraints of time I am unable to contribute with a full, scholarly paper to this important volume. I offer instead a recent keynote speech delivered on July 7, 2015, commemorating the 70th anniversary of China’s victory in World War II.

But I would like first to express the extraordinary admiration and affection that I feel for Professor Leutner. She has influenced us all, and our field, in profound ways.

Few intellectuals combine scholarship at the highest level with field- and institution building, also at the highest level. Professor Leutner does, and she has done so with a democratic spirit of inclusiveness across disciplines, generations, and national boundaries that is rarer still.

Professor Leutner came of age at a time of cultural revolutions both in Germany and China. Deeply educated in modern European and Chinese schools of sinological research, not to mention in historiography at both ends of the Eurasian continent, her first work, on Geschichtsschreibung zwischen Politik und Wissenschaft, studies an early generation of Chinese Marxist historians whose work seems fresh today compared to the ‘official Marxist’ historiography of the contemporary PRC...
