Abstract: This article deals with realms of memory concerning the First World War and the possibilities of integrating them into teaching programs of German Studies and teaching German as a foreign language. The article focuses on learning by changing perspectives, presenting contrary positions among German contemporaries concerning the outbreak of the war, comparing different national ways of remembering a transnational event (with particular attention on Belgium) and finally advocating a change from a eurocentric view towards the war into a more global one.
