Summary

This is the monumental volume that many scholars and admirers of the verse of the skalds will have been waiting for. It is likely to form the capstone in the series publishing the skaldic poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages and now joins prior volumes devoted to poetry from the kings’ sagas, from treatises on poetics, and from the legendary sagas. Future volumes will address runic poetry, poetry in Icelandic history, poetry on Christian subjects, and end with a comprehensive bibliography and indices. The present volume is organized by saga titles and the poetry proclaimed in the course of events, including longer works such as formal praise poems, includes verse extemporaneously composed by both saga principals and lesser characters. Fifteen different editors have been responsible for the editing of these some thirty longer works and briefer tales.
