The centenary of the birth of Pierre Werner (1913–2013) offered a timely opportunity to reflect on the personality and achievements of this politician from Luxembourg who left his mark on the future of his country and on the European integration process. Marianne Backes is Director of the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE) in Luxembourg. After studying political science and international relations in Brussels, she turned her attention to education and in-service training. She soon became aware of the tremendous potential offered by information and communication technologies for the field of humanities and social sciences, and this led her to launch and direct a project which resulted in the development of the European NAvigator digital library (ENA). She has been Director of the CVCE since it was established in 2002. She leads a team of researchers and experts in building the CVCE.eu digital research infrastructure on European integration, which includes enriched data, enhanced publications, and tools and services for data management, analysis, visualisation and representation. She is also the Luxembourg national coordinator for the DARIAH-ERIC consortium, which promotes the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH) at European level.

Lorenzo Bini Smaghi is currently a Visiting Scholar at Harvard’s Weatherhead Centre for International Affairs and at the Istituto Affari Internazionali. He is Chairman of the Board of the Snam gas company. He also chairs the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence and the Italian Chapter of the Alumni of the University of Chicago.
