Karikatur und Kommentar

Abstract: The so-called language-image-texts have increasingly become the focus of interest of the multimodal oriented media discourse analysis. Examples of recent publications in this field areDiekmannshenke et al. (2011), Antos et al. (2014) or Opiłowski (2015). One of the important questions is the relationship between the material devices or the different semiotic resources, e.g. linguistic expressions, topography and image, if we just concentrate only on the print media analysis. There has been a consensus so far as realized image-text contributions have always hada sort of multi-layered nature and their perception and understanding empower the receiver to attribute different meaning on different levels according to the context. This has already been shown in detail by Roland Barthes (1964).

In this paper the focus is on a special type of language-image-texts, the political newspaper cartoon. Which position does it take in press coverage? To what extent is it justified to speak of certain “image acts” (Schmitz 2007)? What persuasion potential does such multimodal type have? By which means is this constructed? Are there any parallels to the journalistic commentary or the gloss? The study is based on examples from the French press.

Keywords: newspaper cartoon, journalistic commentary/gloss, multimodal documents, discourse analysis, persuasion potential
