Abstract: This article examines recent collections of historical documents relating to the Portuguese colonization in Timor – in particular Thomaz (2002, 2008) – in order to describe the deep connection between the Portuguese language and religious colonization on the island. We maintain that the colonization of Timor only became, in fact, political-military from the arrival of the first Portuguese governor in 1702. The two previous centuries of contact between Portuguese rule and the Timorese nobility was mediated by Catholic religious orders, and was concerned mainly with the sandalwood trade or with political and territorial negotiations. Formal education was also initially the exclusive responsibility of the Church, which in 1898 founded the first school and in 1952 operated 33 of the 39 primary schools in East Timor. Despite some occasional efforts at translating the Bible or even homilies, missionaries, as well as commercial, political and educational figures used mostly the Portuguese language in Timor and its dissemination among the native elite is linked to the Church and not to the Portuguese Crown, because the Crown was represented by the missionaries.
