„Aber die müssen doch so eine Prüfung machen“ – zu sprachlichen Anforderungen und Voraussetzungen internationaler Studierender in den Ingenieurwissenschaften
Abstract International students in Germany are obligated to complete one of the accredited tests of German as a foreign language (e. g. DSH, TestDaF) before enrolling. However, a large portion of them do not have sufficient German language skills to do so. This article discusses several reasons as to why students are not being taught in the most effective manner, by focusing on sentence transformation exercises that play an essential role in preparatory academic language courses. The analysis of passive and passive-alternative structures, as well as causal relations in technical articles in automotive engineering, will demonstrate that the aforementioned exercises are not genuinely helpful in comprehending academic language.
Keywords: DSH, causal relations, passive, passive-alternative constructions, TestDaF, sentence transformation exercises
