(Un)pädagogische Visionen für das 21. Jahrhundert / (Non-)Educational Visions for the 21st Century

Geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Entwürfe nach dem Ende der ‹großen› Menschheitsgeschichte / Humanities and Social Science Concepts after the End of the ‹Great› History of Mankind

Series:

Edited By Gerd-Bodo von Carlsburg and Annette Miriam Stross

Are visions imaginations of fantasies and illusions or even hallucinations of past times? Or has a vision, in retrospect and in preview, a potential that humanists and social scientists can and should use in the present?

In this volume scientists from Germany, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Sweden and China show that current debates in the humanities and social sciences on topics such as ecology, interreligious dialogue, identity learning, health education, digital participation, (world) peace, sacrotourism, cultural management can be revitalized by including visionary perspectives from different scientific disciplines.

Social Change as a Context for Contemporary Changes on the Labour and Education Market

Extract

Małgorzata Szpilska

Abstract: The paper presents the author’s reflections on social change, development and social progress in the context of their impact on the changes observed in vocational education and training (VET) and the contemporary labour market. The theses formulated are based on the feedback from active participation in the realization and implementation of three editions of the European research and educational programmes as a coordinator and executor, qualitative analyses of strategic documents with desk research method, and supplemented by individual face-to-face in-depth interviews with the representatives of selected organizations. What are the features of contemporary social change and what are its consequences for education? What skills will be necessary to stay on the labour market in the near future? These are the main questions asked by the author. Although it is impossible to answer them unambiguously, the process itself of interpretation of the observed phenomena and the attempt to predict new professions and competence requirements in the future bring a profound educational value.

Keywords: Social change, labour market, vocational education and training, skills, professions of the future.

Especially in the second half of the twentieth century, there was a rapid acceleration of change in all areas of life. Human history is about half a million years old. (…) If the whole time of mankind’s existence were shortened to one day, agriculture would be created by 23.56, civilizations by 23.57. The development of modern societies would start at 23.59 and 30 seconds. And yet,...
