Zum Problem der Gattungsbestimmung von Muspilli
Abstract A number of researchers have considered the Old High German poem Muspilli as an apocalyptic text that was widely appreciated in the Middle Ages. The text has been regarded within the canon of apocalyptic literature due to its title (Krogmann 1964, 98–114) or contents that show signs of the end of the world and illustrate the events of the Last Judgement (Feifalik 1858, 351; Jeske 2006, 425). By exploring the features of an apocalyptic text, the aim of the paper is to identify whether Muspilli can be viewed as a specimen of apocalyptic literature. The findings of the study reveal that, out of the ten criteria for an apocalyptic text, Muspilli meets two criteria of form and five of content. Thus the treatment of this text as apocalyptic is not sufficiently motivated and requires thorough investigation and discussion.
Keywords: Muspilli, identification of a genre, apocalyptic literature
