Preface his volume brings together a selection of fine papers in the field of biblical studies from the perspective of the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Church traditions. The papers, submitted to the “Bible in the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Traditions” unit of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), were presented and discussed at the 2008 Annual Meeting of SBL which took place in Boston, Massachussetts, November 22–25, 2008. The theme chosen by the steering committee of the SBL unit for the year 2008 was “The Old Testament as Authoritative Scripture in the Early Churches of the East.” The intent was to focus on the function of the Old Testament in the theology, liturgy and spirituality of the churches in the East. The number of scholars who applied to participate in the unit was a clear indication of the importance and relevance of this subject in the scholarly world. Due to time limitations and in order to maintain the academic stan- dards set by the unit’s steering committee, 13 scholars were selected to present in one of the two sessions. I had the pleasure of chairing the first session on November 22, 2009. The second session was chaired by Dr. Michael Legaspi from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska on November 23, 2009. I extend thanks to all the scholars who participated in the conference and presented thought-provoking papers, exemplifying the latest research in their fields of study.
