On a warm spring day, 15 students gathered in a MacArthur High School2 classroom during lunchtime for their weekly Gay–Straight Alliance (GSA) meeting. Kathryn, the leader of the club, wrote on the whiteboard at the front of the room; see Figure 1.1 below.
