Before midnight on the first of June our telephone rang. It was downstairs in the hall close to the entrance door. I started running, but stopped half way down the stairs. Our old housekeeper Mrs. Svobodová had picked up the receiver. She just stood and listened and did not speak. After a long pause she said,“Yes, yes. I will pass it on.” She hung up and turned to me.
