I want to acknowledge the contribution of all those who have supported me in this research endeavor. First, I would like to thank my first mentor Dr. Bruce Laviolette for his support and invaluable assistance for shaping the first three chapters of this dissertation.

This dissertation would not have been completed without the constant support and encouragement extended to me by committee member Dr. Ed throughout the study. Your patience to edit and give valuable comments for improvement all along the way in this doctoral journey is much appreciated. Whenever I faced obstacles, you were there to raise my morale and help me continue with this journey, especially when I had to change mentors due their poor health conditions. I acknowledge my chair Dr. Jigoulov, for supporting me whenever called upon for help and for guiding me to the finishing point. I would like to convey my thanks to committee member Dr. Allison for all the timely advice extended to me during the final stages of this dissertation.

I would like to thank especially my wife for all time spared and children for all the support extended throughout the study by bearing with me when I was sitting in front of the computer, which otherwise I would have spent with you.
