This book explores a range of topics situated in the overlapping areas of theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics and translation studies. The first part of the book comprises five original contributions on topics ranging from general linguistics to applied linguistics while the second part comprises eleven original contributions exploring selected aspects of theoretical, descriptive and applied translation studies.
This book also initiates the publishing activity of the Department of Translation Studies, established at the Institute of English Studies, University of Wrocław, Poland.
Problem-Based Learning Method: A New Approach in Teaching Translation
Abstract: How can we learn in order to acquire knowledge? How can we teach in order to do so efficiently? These are the questions that have haunted students and teachers from the dawn of history, but these have also guided them in their pursuit of new methods of teaching and learning. One of these, which is going to be discussed here, is called PBL. This paper reveals the attempts to use Problem-Based Leaning in teaching translation. It discusses the possibilities as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using this method of instruction in teaching translation at the University of Warsaw, Faculty of Applied Linguistics. The target languages are Russian and English and the exemplary text chosen to be treated as a “problem” is called “Crime Chronicles”. This paper is based on authentic lessons given by the author and therefore sums up her experience with this new way of academic teaching.
