Abstract: The wider uses of internet access among various age segments in Indonesia become the main trigger in our attempt to understand the pattern of internet usage in families. It begins with a concern that besides the benefits of the widely available access, the internet can also bring disadvantages, especially for the minor family members. At the same time, it becomes urgent that the pattern of usage and the need for controlling the access as well as the strategies that family can employ are known for the wiser use of internet access. The dual career families were chosen as our cases, based on the fact that without the challenge of controlling the internet, such families are already faced with work-family interface issues. Thus the situation can become more difficult with internet access as part of the family matters to handle. This study used a qualitative approach, with multiple case studies design. Four themes that cover the pattern of usage and misuse of online access were identified, namely: Patterns of usage and misuse, the impact of excessive and prolonged usage, strategies for control of internet access, and factors contributing to an effective strategy.
