19:   New Generation Pharmacy

1 Introduction: The Past and Present of Pharmacy

Even though pharmacy had a history dated back to old times and had practice areas as a part of medical science, the oldest written evidence that plants have been used in the preparation of medicines was found in a Sumerian clay tablet (Petrovska, 2012). The pharmacy profession continued to develop in the ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Hittite, Indian, Chinese, Roman, Greek, and Islam in middle ages, Medieval Europe and Renaissance periods. Pharmaceutical sciences are considered as one of the most complex and sophisticated efforts of mankind, which forms the basis of the discovery, development, production and use of medications. Eight service areas have been defined by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) within the scope of the advanced practices of the pharmacy profession (FIP, 2012):

• Academic pharmacy

• Clinical biology

• Community pharmacy

• Health and medicines information

• Hospital pharmacy
