3.1   City Logistics in the Context of Smart Cities

Abstract: As communal life shifted towards cities following the Industrial Revolution, problems such as population growth, housing, heavy traffic, high energy consumption, noise, environmental pollution emerged. In this context, city logistics is distinguished as a research area that encompasses solutions to problems in cities, where socio-cultural and economic activities take place, such as raising the quality of life, achieving sustainable economic growth, carrying out human/cargo transportation in optimal conditions with minimum adverse effects, reducing visual and noise pollution. Real-time and accurate information bears critical importance in providing support to the solving of logistical problems in cities. Developing solutions to logistical problems is possible through the collection of necessary information and its evaluation. The smart city concept aims to collect data from different locations in cities using communication and information systems and, by interpreting the collected data, to offer solutions to urban issues such as production, housing, transportation and communication within city limits. In this context, it can be said that strategies for city logistics and the smart city concept overlap in terms of urban mobility. Cases from across the world and Turkey will be examined within the scope of the study and recommendations will be offered with regards to configuring strategies for city logistics in smart city projects.
