25   Decent Work and Economic Growth as a Sustainable Development Policy

Introduction

This paper aims to investigate the relationship between decent work, which is one of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) goals, and economic growth from a sustainable development perspective. After 1980, globalization and technological improvements have brought about many issues for workers in the world. These issues are mostly related to development topics. If development is sustainable, it can provide several solutions to many issues about workers. Therefore, this study starts with a description of the concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development has been discussed since the second half of the 20th century. Sustainable development is also a public policy objective. The concept of decent work has emerged in recent years. Even though, this concept was found out by ILO in 1999, in fact, decent work concept had also been put forward by United Nations (UN) in 2015. Similarly, UN had revealed that seventeen goals for achieving sustainable development in the same year. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are planned to get a better and more sustainable future for the world. UN associated decent work with economic and social issues. According to UN, about half of the world’s population lives the equivalent of about 2$ a day and world’s average unemployment rate is approximately 5,7 % till now.
