Irrespective of the separation between religion and state, societies are confronted with claims to incorporate religious beliefs in public education. The anthology deals with the relevant issues referring to the history of ideas, epistemology, ethics, jurisprudence, political philosophy, and the philosophy of education.

Religia w świetle filozofii wychowania Johna Deweya Izabela Janus Religion in the light of John Dewey’s philosophy of education For Dewey, education is a way to improve the life-experience of a social group. The task of public schools is to create and present to pupils the simplified image of social environment. The worthless elements appearing in the social life are to be excluded from it. Dewey regards traditional religion, based on claims about the supernatural, as one of such elements. According to him, the idea of supernatural arose as a result of some kind of error, mistake, and misunderstanding of religious experiences. Moreover this idea obstructs the implementation of democratic values. Thus, there is no place in public schools for teaching religion. However, his position implies some problems: There are many ethically controver- sial issues which can legally enter public discussion. It is doubtful whether teachers who have influence on pupils can stay indifferent towards such issues or towards questions of metaphysical character often asked for by young people. Furthermore, the Deweyan critique of supernaturalism is untenable from the Christian point of view.
