How to Do Things with Pictures

Pictorial meaning involves not just resemblance, but also pictorial skills, pictorial acts, practices, and performance. Especially in the classroom setting, at all levels of education, it is essential to realize that teaching with pictures and learning through pictures is a practical enterprise where thinking is embedded in doing. Promoting visual learning means to be a visionary, and to take on an enormous educational challenge. But while adaptation and innovation are inevitable in a world where technological changes are rapidly and radically altering the learning environment, educational science and the everyday practice of education clearly need to retain a measure of conservatism. And any conservatism worth the name has to take account of visuality, visual thinking, and visual learning.

ACZÉL, PETRA, is Associate Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, and head of the Institute of Behavioural Science and Communication Theory. She studied at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, earned her PhD degree in lin- guistics with the thesis titled Winning with Word: Classical and Modern Argu- mentation Theory in 2003, and gave her habilitation lecture for university pro- fessorship in 2011. Her research interests are focused on the theory and practice of rhetoric. She is author and co-author of four books and numerous essays on verbal and visual argumentation, persuasive communication and (new) media communication. Her recent publications include contributions to the debate on “new rhetoric” and new media rhetoric, among them her paper “Enchanting Bewilderment: Concerns for Visual Rhetoric”, in András Benedek and Kristóf Nyíri (eds.), Images in Language: Metaphors and Metamorphoses (series VIS- UAL LEARNING, vol. 1), Frankfurt: Peter Lang, 2011, and “Mediarhetoric: Com- plex Visual Literacy”, in András Benedek and Kristóf Nyíri (eds.), The Iconic Turn in Education (series VISUAL LEARNING, vol. 2), Frankfurt: Peter Lang, 2012. She holds memberships in Hungarian and international communication as- sociations and boards.
