From Pius XI to Francis
Appendix IV Pope John Paul II, References to Gandhi
POPE JOHN PAUL II
References to Gandhi
John Paul II’s visit to India in 1986 was a pilgrimage that began from the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi. The first excerpt is from an article he had published as Cardinal in the L’Osservatore Romano, which indicates that he had read Gandhi’s Autobiography long before he became Pope. Of the four speeches that refer to the Pope’s cherished Indian visit, the third is exclusively dedicated to the Mahatma. It was delivered on the occasion of his homage before Gandhi’s tomb at Raj Ghat, New Delhi.
