Erinnerungsorte im Fremdsprachenunterricht als Arena
Abstract: Cultural didactics ought to reflect further developments of the concept of realms of memory in cultural and historical science: The emphasis should lie more than before on the constructiveness, heterogeneity and diversity of realms of memory. Against this background the article claims that memory conflicts or non-consensual realms of memory are productive for cultural learning processes. This statement is in particular based on the concept of ‘arena’ in social science (Leggewie and Zifonun) and the concept of symbolic competence in cultural didactics (Kramsch), and in general on concepts of memory studies that manifest a shift from national to transnational perspectives (Rothberg, Assmann). If you transfer these concepts on cultural learning processes, learning targets like constructive debate, conflict management and change in perspectives tend to be more important than the transfer of knowledge. In conclusion, the assumption is exemplified on a concrete case study, the memory conflict in Estonia called Aljoscha or the Bronze soldier.
