Globalization is a long-standing phenomenon which has been attracting the considerable attention of academicians, businessmen, politicians, bureaucrats, students, and other actors of societies by its causes and consequences in social, economic, cultural, and organizational order. In a theoretical sense, globalization may give an opportunity to counties, firms, and individuals for improving their well-being levels by a substantial increase in trade and financial services, the opportunity of social and cultural contacts, a global solution to political problems. Globalization leads to change traditional institutions and implementation in countries. Therefore, the effects of globalization in countries may be different from each other; the effect of globalization should be separately analyzed. This edited book evaluates the effect of globalization in the case of Turkey. Furthermore, since the effects of globalization on macro and micro level may change, this book contains analyses in sectoral level.
Globalization, however, has affected lots of countries in the world, and it could not give symmetric effect on their welfare. While some countries have difficulty in taking advantages of globalization, some fortunate countries such as Singapore, China, and South Korea benefit from globalization by increasing trade, foreign direct investment, other financial flows, human capital, technology level, and economic growth as well. Why have countries been affected asymmetrically by globalization? The answer to the question may be institutional differences among the countries. If the answer given by institutional economists is right, there should be a strong relationship between institutional quality and economic performance indicators in the globalized world. This edited book explores relationships between innovative institutions and socio-economic performance as well.
The book consists of two parts: (i) Globalization and Its Effects, (ii) Institution and Socio-Economic Performance. Nine articles in the first part concentrate on the definition of globalization, approaches to globalization, effects of globalization and various issues related to globalization such as global business ethics, carbon tax, public administration reforms, state spending, exports, tourism and foreign direct investment.
