Friendship under Stress

The mighty North-American republic at times exerted considerable pressure to force the small European neutral into submission to its immediate, short-range policy goals. This was especially the case during the last years of World War II and the early postwar years. Switzerland, on the whole, successfully withstood this pressure and has seen its viewpoint vindicated more often than not by the course of events.
