Preparing Students for the Real World of Conference Interpreting – Relay Simultaneous Interpretation Contest

With the aim of bringing interpretation trainees closer to the real world of multi-lingual conferences in China, Shanghai International Studies University held the first and second multi-lingual relay simultaneous interpreting contests in 2018 and 2019. From designing to organization and implementation, many practices were introduced for the first time in China. The event and experience are invaluable. This article provides a full landscape to the contest, including preparation, contest procedures, marking rules, improvements for future contests, problems encountered and further discussions for teaching of simultaneous interpreting. The experience will be of support for other future events of the discipline of interpretation.
